Adenoid and Tonsil Operations

Op. Dr. Bahar Kayahan Sirkeci

Adenoids and tonsils are lymphatic organs that play an important role in the body’s immunity and, due to their location, are the first receptors and protectors against respiratory infections.

Adenoids is located behind the nose, on the back of the small tongue, begin to form in the womb and are present in almost everyone in childhood, disappearing with age, usually with puberty. Not all adenoids require treatment; however, if it grows too far forward and causes sleeping problems as the mouth open, snoring or breathing disruptions such as apnea, or if it moves sideways and causes fluid accumulation behind the eardrum, frequent otitis media or hearing loss, it should be followed up by an ENT specialist. It is followed up for shrinkage with some medical treatments, and cases that do not respond to treatment should be operated.

In case of frequent recurrence of tonsillitis thus  fever and the need for antibiotic use in any case (more than 5 times a year in children, more than 2 times a year in adults), in the presence of suspicion of malignant tonsil tumor, in the presence of excessive tonsil enlargement causing breathing and swallowing difficulties,  in case of chronic tonsillitis that causes bad breath and swelling of the lymph nodes, in case of chronic tonsillitis in people with heart rheumatism (acute rheumatic fever), heart valve inflammation or kidney inflammation, in case of adenoid and tonsil enlargement that disrupts the jaw and tooth structure, tonsils are also surgically removed.
